We have never claimed to be Dave Eggers. Ever. Today, mcsweeneys.net reports that some of our correspondents have claimed to receive email from "someone claiming to be me [the M.R., which we assume is Dave Eggers]." We have never signed an email 'Dave,' 'Dave Eggers' or 'Mr, Eggers.'

Again, for anyone who has received an email thinking it was from David Eggers, we apologize for the confusion, but we would hope that everyone review their email from us closely. If we send you a link, more than likely it is relevant and we encourage you to read it in its entirety as well. We do not include the contents of the Village Voice article (which is typically the link we include to those who think their mail to our site is being sent to Dave Eggers) of some weeks ago because it is easier to read the article itself than for us to paraphrase. The article is helpfully located here:

http://www.villagevoice.com/issues/0017/hong.shtml

We think that there is more that needs to be said about this, and we will. We will present a more detailed response next week, and we hope everyone returns from a nice holiday to take a look-see.

One final note: for those who have received mail from us and thought it was from David Gergen, we cannot help you. We suspect that Mr. Gergen has dispatched his infernal emissaries and they have hijinxed our mail server to send out deceitful and rather unseemly screeds. We are working to fix this problem posthaste. If you receive email from our address that is signed David Gergen, do not respond. Do not even read it. We are afraid of what might befall you. Very afraid.

Hi.
